Study information for Cholesterol Trials

Elevated Cholesterol and Coronary Heart Disease
Unfortunately, many patients with elevated cholesterol levels go undetected as there are rarely any physical signs or symptoms for the patient or their physician. In 2004, the Center for Disease Control stated that over 105 million Americans had a total blood cholesterol level of greater than 200mg/dL. Over 42 million had levels of greater than 240mg/dL, which puts these patients at a high risk for Coronary Heart Disease and complications of heart disease.

The risk factors for elevated cholesterol and coronary heart disease include:

Men - 45 years of age or older
Women - over 55 or with premature menopause without estrogen replacement therapy.

Family history of premature CHD (definite heart attack or sudden death before age 55 in father or other close male relative, or before 65 years of age in mother or other close female relative).

Current cigarette smoking.

High blood pressure (hypertension) (>140/90 mm Hg on blood pressure medications).

High LDL cholesterol (>100mg/dL or >70mg/dL for Diabetics).

Low HDL cholesterol (<35mg/dl).

Diabetes mellitus.
Current Treatments and Ongoing Clinical Trials
There are many treatments available for patients with elevated cholesterol with or without coronary heart disease. Even if you do not meet any of the risk factors for coronary heart disease, it is important that you seek treatment for your elevated cholesterol. There are several classes of medications for the treatment of elevated cholesterol already approved in the US by the FDA and many are now generic and very affordable. However, clinical trials are still being conducted to find alternative treatments for those patients that may not be able to tolerate the available treatments or are not getting the results they need to reduce their risks.
