Overweight and Obesity - Statistics and Risk Factors
About two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight and almost one-third are obese according to information collected in 2001 to 2004. Today, this number continues to climb as well as the health risks, mortality rate, and costs associated with treating overweight and obesity related conditions. There are many methods in determining the definitions of overweight and obesity, but the most commonly used is calculating a patient's Body Mass Index (BMI), a relationship of height and weight. To calculate your BMI, visit http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/. An individual with a calculated BMI of 25-29 is considered to be overweight and obese with a BMI greater than or equal to 30.
There are many known risk factors for patients that suffer from being overweight and obese. These conditions include: Diabetes, Coronary Heart Disease, High Blood Cholesterol, Stroke, Hypertension, Gallbladder Disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Apnea and other breathing problems, and some forms of Cancer (Uterine, Breast, Colorectal, Kidney and Gallbladder).

Treatments and Continuing Research for the treatment of Overweight/Obesity
There are widely known and used treatments for overweight and obese individuals. The current treatments include; dietary changes, increased physical activity, behavior modification, weight loss surgery, and prescription weight loss medication. To date, only two prescription medications are approved in the US by the FDA for the treatment of overweight/obesity. Clinical research is critical in finding new medications and/or surgical interventions for additional options.
The Dallas Diabetes and Endocrine Center is currently participating in several clinical trials testing new compounds for the treatment of overweight/obese patients.
